LEARNING EXPERIENCE DESIGN

Learning Modernization

When required content updates created an opportunity to modernize the learning experience.

The Ask

A series of policy, process, and regulatory changes required updates to several existing learning programs.

The initial request focused on revising content to reflect current requirements while ensuring learners continued to receive accurate and compliant information. Existing courses contained valuable content, but many had been developed using older tools that were no longer available.

Stakeholders wanted to update the content, preserve business requirements, and ensure the programs remained effective and sustainable moving forward.

My Discovery

Rather than updating content immediately, I reviewed the existing learning experiences to better understand how learners interacted with the material and where opportunities existed to improve engagement, usability, and long-term sustainability.

Three questions guided the analysis:

What did employees need?

Clear, engaging learning experiences that focused attention on key decisions, concepts, and actions rather than unnecessary visual and media distractions.

What did the organization need?

A more consistent and maintainable approach to learning design that would simplify future updates while preserving business requirements and compliance expectations.

What was standing in the way?

A collection of legacy design practices, inconsistent media standards, duplicated content, and development approaches that had become increasingly difficult to maintain over time.

While the courses contained valuable information, they reflected a variety of design approaches, visual styles, media strategies, and development practices that had evolved over many years. Branding varied across courses, audio quality was inconsistent, and interactions often emphasized navigation over meaningful engagement with the content.

The organization wasn't struggling to provide information. It was looking for ways to create learning experiences that better aligned with modern learning principles and the expectations of today's learners.

At the same time, many development decisions that made sense when the courses were originally created had become increasingly difficult to maintain. Content updates often required significant redevelopment effort, audio revisions could be time-consuming, and similar content frequently existed across multiple courses.

The challenge wasn't simply updating courses.

The challenge was creating learning experiences that were easier to maintain, more engaging for learners, and better aligned with modern learning principles.

The question changed from “How do update the courses?” to “How do we create a modern and sustainable learning portfolio?”

The Solution

The solution focused on using required content updates as an opportunity to modernize the learning portfolio while creating a more sustainable foundation for future maintenance and growth.

Rather than treating content accuracy, learner experience, and long-term maintainability as separate objectives, the modernization effort addressed all three simultaneously.

Three key principles guided the work:

  • Content Accuracy: Policy, process, and regulatory updates were incorporated throughout the learning programs to ensure content remained accurate, compliant, and aligned with current business requirements.

  • Learning Experience: Courses were redesigned to improve usability, engagement, visual consistency, and learner interaction. Outdated media elements were replaced, interactions were simplified, and assessments were revised to better support understanding and application.

  • Sustainability: Development approaches, templates, and assets were standardized to simplify future maintenance. Content structures were streamlined, redundant elements were reduced, and courses were designed to make future updates faster and easier to implement.

The result was more than a collection of updated courses. The modernization effort created a learning portfolio that was easier for learners to navigate, easier for the organization to maintain, and better positioned to evolve as business needs changed.

By balancing content accuracy, learner experience, and sustainability, the organization gained a solution that addressed immediate requirements while reducing the effort required to support future updates and enhancements.

The Results

Improved Learner Experience

The updated programs provided learners with a more modern, consistent, and engaging experience. Improved visual design, streamlined interactions, and revised assessments helped focus attention on key concepts while reducing unnecessary distractions and cognitive load.

Modernized Learning Portfolio

The modernization effort established more consistent development standards across the learning portfolio. Courses became easier to navigate, easier to update, and more aligned with current learning and design practices while continuing to support business and compliance requirements.

Lasting Impact

The project reinforced an important principle that continues to guide my work: modernization is not simply about replacing outdated technology. The greatest value comes from creating solutions that are easier to maintain, easier to evolve, and better able to support future business needs.

Years later, members of the internal team were able to make course updates with minimal development experience and without requiring extensive technical support. The modernization effort not only improved the learner experience—it created a more sustainable foundation for future growth and change.
